Reporting to the Vice President, Corporate Communications, the Director, External Communications is accountable for developing, coordinating, executing and integrating external corporate communications. In concert with the Vice President, Corporate Communications, the Director will develop a comprehensive external corporate communication plan, in addition to developing and executing supporting materials to ensure the highest standards of quality and professionalism are maintained. As strong writer and exceptional verbal communicator, you will play a key role in external brand promotion and protection. You also posses a track record of finding the “so what” in data and using it to inform future direction and activities. This function works closely with the Vice President, Corporate Communications to evolve the organization’s narrative and communications priorities.

As a member of this team, you will be responsible for:

•Developing and directing an external communications plan that promotes and protects the OMERS brand with key stakeholders
•Continuously scanning the environment for continued awareness of new developments relevant to OMERS, identifying opportunities and risks, and recommending effective courses of action
•Promoting the OMERS brand to a range of key audiences:
o Media relations – proven ability to build relationships and understanding of today’s media environment
o Social media content development
o Speech and presentation development
•Leveraging analytics and insight to inform future direction and activities
•Participating in business continuity activities
•Overseeing a small team of communications professionals and effectively coordinating intake and delivery of content
•Remaining current on communications best practices and is up to date on significant developments in the pension and investment industries

To succeed in this role, you:

Must have:
• Minimum 10 years professional communications experience with management experience in roles that required a high degree of communication strategy and content development.
• Strong background in communications planning with the ability to address the evolving communications landscape and the role of traditional and social media
• Proven track record of success of influencing internal and external stakeholders
• Acuity in issues/crisis management with history of successfully handling highly sensitive and complex situations
• Experience in marketing communications with the ability to promote and create profile for the organization and key leaders
• Familiarity with communications design, capability to work collaboratively with design experts and use presentation technologies
• Demonstrated project management, leadership, and management skills gained through experience in managing multiple and diverse projects
• Excellent judgment and proven ability to achieve results and make decisions in changing, complex environments
• Ability to work as an effective participant in a dynamic management team environment focused on multiple priorities
• Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

The following would be considered an asset:
• Experience in pensions or financial services
